Critical reception

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy Chart Blog gave the song a positive review stating:

They weren't wrong either when describing their new single as "a bit more emotive than the last one, but it's not a Christmas ballad". With a full orchestra in tow they hum in classic boyband fashion with their tails between their legs, begging to be taken back by their sweethearts. "Can we fall one more time/ Stop the tape and rewind?" asks Harry, before they croon "It's gotta be you" on the catchy-as-coldsores chorus. Word of advice, guys, perhaps it's best you keep the irrational fears between yourselves next time. To conclude, a mint song sang by mint boys. .[1]

Whilst another gave the song a negative review commenting:

‘Gotta Be You’ is a strings-driven track with guitars and drums thrown in during the chorus – probably just so you don’t get bored after the verses, during which the boys grovel to a girl who they messed up with and want to do anything they can to win her back. The chorus simply consists of the repetitive line ‘It’s gotta be you/Only you’ (and the boys showing off their falsetto), coupled with the annoying ‘hey, hey, hey’ chanted monotonously in the background. Surely bound to get on your nerves, but also hard to get out of your head. The middle eight is a rather unimaginative, sloppy mess, with the swooning lines ‘Girl can we try one more, one more time/Can we try one more, one more time/I’ll make it better’. ‘Gotta Be You’ will sit well within the scope of flavourless but popular music of the moment and is sure to keep their vast legion of ‘Directioners’ happy and screaming in excitement. Unfortunately, as far as musically mature and diverse boy bands go, One Direction are still well below the bar. Remember, good looks can only get you so far. [2]

Music video

A music video to accompany the release of "Gotta Be You" was first released onto YouTube on 8 November 2011 at a total length of three minutes and fifty-six seconds.[3] The video starts with Liam singing and Harry, Louis and Zayn walking out of bootcamp with bags. Niall is playing the guitar in some shots. Harry walks through the forest while singing, Louis sings while driving a Mini Cooper and Zayn is travelling by a train. The five end up meeting with girls in a camping spot in the forest. Zayn starts singing to his love while fireworks are bursting in the background. Then all of them watch the fireworks. The music video ends when Zayn walks towards the girl and kisses her.
